Steeple Concerts at St. Paul's proudly kicks off our Spring Season with the New Brunswick Chamber Orchestra, as they present a remarkable concert of deeply spiritual minimalism. Mark Hyczko leads the NBCO in "Transcendence" this Saturday February 9 at 7:30 PM at St. Paul's Church, Westfield.
The concert begins with the North American premiere of John Tavener's lush "Mahashakti", scored for solo violinist (Ruotao Mao), strings, and percussionist. In this work, Tavener offers a prayerful meditation to the Hindu divinity representing Feminine Energy. The second work features soloist Carl Patrick Bolleia in the driving excitement of Henryk Górecki's "Harpsichord Concerto" (unlike any other harpischord piece you'll ever hear).
Ending the program is the landmark "Tabula Rasa" by Arvo Pärt, the first major work exploring his characteristic "tintinabulli" style of composition. Written for two solo violinists, this performance will feature Ruotao Mao and Elena Chernova-Davis, accompanied by the entire orchestra and the haunting bell-like sounds of the prepared piano.
